Depends on the ballast, PFO makes a probe start, pulse start, and HQI ballast. But the answer is yes, kind of, because they will all fire a single ended XM bulb. I think the double ended bulb will only fire on the appropriate HQI ballast though.

I run 250 watt SE and 400 watt SE XM 20,000K bulbs on PFO standard ballasts. I really love the way my corals glow under these bulbs! It's almost time to swap out all my bulbs and I will be replacing them with the eaxct same bulbs. Not a single complaint at all!

PFO TAR and PULSE ballasts should both run XM bulbs. I've been running an XM 10K bulb off a PFO TAR ballast(I think this is a probe start?) for almost 9 months and its working great, I love it. I plan to try out a 15K bulb as my next bulb.

Hope this helps,

Chris

there both tar ballasts. the HQI or the pulse are the best options and should start any bulb out there. the Normal ballast that everyone keeps calling "Tar" will only start a probe start bulb.
