I have been there 4 times.

Honestly it is my least favourite place in Mexico.

If you haven't already booked a place to stay I can recommend a place called Paradise Village which has suites including a little kitchen, it is in Nueva Vallarta 10 or 15 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, it is very nice. Nice pools, tennis courts with free tennis lessons, little mall/grocery store nearby, gorgeous beach with good swimming.

The town of Puerto Vallarta itself is a cesspool. Dirty grimy streets, traffic noise, filth and pollution. Drunken American tourists, obese Mexican prostitutes, you get the idea. I would avoid the town of Puerto Vallarta and look at tours around the region instead. We took a horseback tour north of Puerto Vallarta and it was nice. Also there is a small town an hour or so North of Puerto Vallarta, I forget the name, is is supposed to have some good surfing.

If you haven't already booked your flight I recommend Cancun or Ixtapa over Puerto Vallarta anytime.

Also I would suggest talking with your doctor about Hepatitis A immunization and immunization for traveller's diarrhea.

We have already booked our flight and place i would have gone for cacun as well but i rather stay in a four star in purto vallarta then a 2 star in cancun, we booked really late so lots was full. We are staying about 50 min north of purto vallart by a place called punta de minta or somthing like that by a couple little towns one starts with a "B". The resort is called palladium vallarta. And of course ill sit back and relax and you know drink, but i was wondering if there are any nice tours to go on.

Also would you suggest taking american money or canadian or mexican, and should i exchange it here or there?

We always take some American Money but mostly Mexican Pesos. They will not take canadian money anywhere down there. (Although there are lots of currency exchange booths around. The exchange sucks at these though. )
If you find a bank machine in Mexico and withdraw money, it is in pesos and you get charged that days exchange rate. (Probably the best exchange you will find.) If you don't like carrying around oodles of cash you could get USD Travellers checks. But, personally I found them to be a PITA.
If your not sure if a bank machine is close by I would get some money exchanged at your bank here.

Sean,

Don't get me wrong the Puerto Vallarta area is nice it is just the town itself that is not so great.

Punta Mita I recall is the name of the area north of Puerto Vallarta where we took a horseback tour, if I recall correctly it is nice surf and beaches, have a great time there.
