In sump return pump choice!
Hey I am setting up a sump but don't know which return pump to get. I was going to get the eheim 1262 but the person helping me set up the sump says it doesn't have enough flow/head pressure. He is thinking about a lagoon pump. He also mentioned mag drive pumps are very loud. I heard mixed reviews about those pumps. I like his choice of pump because it is super quit but it comes with high price tag. About $325. Wondering if there is another quiet pump on the market.
Any input on this would be very appreciated. |

What size of tank are you putting the sump on? If you can get your hands on a Wave-line DC1000 they are almost dead silent and worth every penny, I believe but don't quote me you can get them for around $280.00

*tank is 8' long, 20" wide and so 20" tall :P
Laguna's are an Askoll-based return pump. You won't find a higher quality product anywhere on the market. Wavelines are okay, but they have diminishing returns on head. Still a good option though.

You for sure want something close to the 2000 gph mark then.

I use a mag drive 12 as a return in a 200G and don't find it noisy at all. I only hear it if I turn half my other equipment off.

I only put slightly more flow through my sump than my skimmer flow is rated at. That's just been my rule of thumb and works for me. Keeps things quiet as well.

Eheim 1262 isn't enough... I had one of these and just took it out a couple weeks back, and put a Mag18 back in... This was due to the fact that there wasn't enought water turnover in the sump for my new skimmer.
The eheim pump is a great pump, but for turnover rate of your tank you need more. My tank is a 180 gallon with 100 gallon sump.
