Default glass top?

ok i am still very new to salt but i see alot people leave there tanks open on top .is there a reson for this? i have a 4 buld t5 about 6 inches over my 90 gallon tank but still left the glass top on tank .sould it be taken off?and just use egg crate for a top .thanks

if your going reef you''re trying to max the light into the tank and salt creep on the glass can cut back on the amount going in. Also reef you're running higher wattages than say a fish only and a open top helps keep the temp in check, then there's the oxygen exchange thing...

Can just leave open but if concerned about jumpers the eggcrate's a good idea.
