Burn time for NEW metal Halide bulbs?

Just wondering what the burn in time for new metal halides bulbs means exactly. Is it the time before a bulb starts to burn at optimum performance? Does it affect color? What does it affect? How long is it usually, 100+ or 100- hrs? thanks
