Vertex omega 150
I'm gonna be moving my 75 into a 120 with about 30 gallons of sump so total water volume 150g, mainly sps i currently use bio pellets and using a omega 150. Is this skimmer gonna be able to work on my new system or should i think about upgrading it's working great atm, but will be gaining alot of water volume right now my total water volume is around 98 gallons.
Thanks alot |

Give it a try
Don't buy a new skimmer until you have tried out the old one. It may work out just fine. If you think you need more skimming and have the room, you could just buy another skimmer to put into the sump along side the old one.

thats a really good idea, 2 skimmers probably be better than 1 bigger one.1 wet skim one dry skim

I was running my vertex 150 in a 200g display 50g in the sump and it did a better job than the reef octopus diablo I was using rated for 500g so I think the skimmer should be fine . IMO

I don't have any experience with this but I've read that running two skimmers doesn't work the way one would expect. Apparently they tend to compete with each other and ultimately bring down the performance of both (ie: the sum is less than the total of the parts). Seems counter-intuitive. Anyways, if that's the route you go I'd be interested in reading your outcomes.

Skimmer
If you ever are looking for a change I have a bashsea twisted skimmer 6-24 and this thing is absolutely amazing. The skimmer I replaced with it was an omega 150 which is a great skimmer but nothing like this bashsea thing. Just my 2 cents. But like I said omega 150 is great too

Also you don't need to add the sump volume into your consideration since your sump is a giant filter, whereas your display is the one that's polluting the system. Unless you are feeding your sump (such as keeping fish in it), then sump volume is not an issue.
ie. If I have a 100g display and 75g sump, I don't need to buy a skimmer rated to easily skim 150-175 total volume, just one that will handle 100g display volume & bioload. Your present skimmer should handle 120g display easily. |
