Default Third DIY: Overflow Box

Well I finished this a while ago, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a digital camera (my bro being a prick as usual). I wanted to get pictures of it up, so I went to my last resort, using my camcorder to capture some pics, so PLEASE excuse the quality of these pictures.

All pictures located here

Incase you're wondering, I believe the size is 6x2x4", and everything was done on CNC.

2 Suction cups hold the overflow onto the back glass.

Inside view. All the teeth were milled out, using a bottlenose endmill to give it the smooth ramp. Figure this will make it less noisy when the water enters.

Now I haven't actually used this overflow yet. I don't have anything to use it with, however hopefully within the month, once my stand/sump is ready, I'll be able to try it out (I've tried the basic bathroom sink test, and it does flow water in rather quietly.

What is the overflow box going to be used for?

If it is for use to divert water to a sump or other tank, I might be a little worried about the suction cups holding the overflow box in the tank. What happens if the box slides down the back wall of the tank because the suction cups lose grip?

Nice DIY job, looks great.

Thanks for your comments!

Yeah, the suctions were a bad idea. I thought i'd play around with it, but here I am a newb, and not thinking. I'm working on a arm that will hold it to the side of the tank, and at the same time be adjustable.

BCOrchidGuy: I'm looking at making a few more for some other peeps as well, however I'd like to try and keep the sizes the same, (makes things much easier for me, and reduces setup time). What size would you be interested in?

Size?... you mean I may have a choice? What??.. hey this almost sounds like customer service, we aren't used to that here on the mainland...6x2x4 sounds great to me.

Lol, and to think that I got my cx skills from working at Rogers AT&T for 3 hellish years

I've done a ton of custom work in the "car moddin'" field for a while now. making odds and ends like aluminum oil caps, battery tie downs. Working on some lower tie bars and other stuff as well right now.
here is a link to some reviews of some of the parts I've made, and shipped pretty much across the world. So far no serious complaints, so I gotta thank Rogers for something

6x4x2 seems to be a good size. The nano guys seem to like it as well, as they can finally get a nice and small overflow. I'd like to maybe have 3 different designs (sizes), and then make a few. But first I want to figure out the arm to hold the overflow box. I want it to be adjustable for sure... just need to figure it out.

Any ideas?

Btw, I was thinking about adding some eggcrate to the top of the overflow.

Good idea? If so, is there anyplace that sells black egg crate?

I've not seen black egg crate, the bad thing about that would be difficulty getting your U tube through. I think with the openings you've got now that would be perfect.
I'll get around to taking some pics of my tidepool overflow it's reasonably adjustable and it can flow about 600gph. I've modified an older overflow to flow a bit extra but I'm still not "pleased" with it. I'm using 1 1/4" PVC and it still wont flow 300 gph.
