![]() So my husband bought me a coral beauty last week as a surprise. One pectoral fin was torn up and her opposite side had a cut on it (probably from being caught) Anyway. After she settled in for a couple of hours i checked her out. The base of her torn fin was kind of fuzzy and white. Over the next couple of days it was going away and her fin didnt look as ragged but then her gills were getting a cloudy slime? over them almost looking like transparent velvet. But now it looks like its going away. Last night I noticed her eye (the one on the side with the torn fin) was going cloudy around the edges and the top of her dorsal has a white fuzzy spot on it.
What the heck is going on? She eats like a pig, perfect swimming seems completely normal. My other two clowns are fine too. The coral beauty was in quarentine in the lfs for about a month prior to purchase. My husband had it on hold and its policy there to have saltwater fish in quarentine for a minimum of 3 weeks before sale. Anyone have any ideas on what her issues are. Ive been doing research but I cant tell if its one disease or a bunch of them. Help!!! |

![]() It could be an internal infection, the torn area may have become infected and is now showing signs of Ick due to the stress. feed lots of garlic and give a FW dip You have to QT her. You may try medicating her food and water in the QT. An anti-biotic maybe someone that is familiar with the medications maybe able to give you some added info. I would use a broad spectrum medication. If her gills are not looking very good a FW dip will help in this department also a lower SG in the QT will her her get needed oxygen. Also raise the temp in the QT to 82 this help to speed up the cycle of Ick and other parasitic infections. If when you do a FW dip you see flukes come off her then Prazi-pro is the best med to help her out. It does not seem to bother the fish, corals or inverts even. Nem's close up and loos a bit of mass. But they come back from the treatment. You have to run the whole 7 day treatment it works better and normally you do not have to retreat the fish or tank.
If she looks like she has a dusting of white or gold powder on her then she has Marine velvet, only treatment is Copper and you have to treat all fish she was with. I would prefer to treat the fish in separate tanks. This helps to stop any fish that has not contracted the MV from actually getting it from the sick fish while in treatment. The tank would have to sit fish less for 3 months to get rid of the MV in the tank. Anyways I hope this helps and we are not to late, can you post some pic's Bill |

![]() Finally someone responded. Thank you!!!!
Alright I have the QT set up. Its currently being heated up to 82F and I mixed a new batch of salt. It should be ready for tomorrow to put her in. What salinity should It be around? 1.022 ?? Less? How long of a FW dip? 5 min? Should i feed chunks of minced garlic? I will need to go to the lfs to see if they have any broad spectrum antibiotics. No she doesnt look like she has a powder on her at all. Its like an overall cloudyness now but her colour is very very pale. Her eye is very cloudy now too. The clowns are still fine. But my coral have been closed up for most of today. Something is going on with my tank. Im going to test it again now. A couple days ago all params were perfect, no changes from any previous tests. I have no idea whats going on. |

![]() well If she is very pale she is definitely stressed, could be ammonia; corals will close up when there is excess ammonia present in the tank. can you heat up the salt water quicker and get her in there tonight. If she does have an internal parasite you do not want it infecting the rest of your tank. is her poo stringy that is one of the signs internal parasites. cloudy eye is poop eye easily cured and may go away with the other treatment.
can you post a pic? can you post your peramiters? what size tank and the equipment you are using? Bill |

![]() Ok I just got back from testing the water
SG 1.025 (refractometer) PH 8.2 Ammonia not detected Nitrite and Nitrate not detected Alkalinity 3.00 (Added baking soda to bring it up to 4.00) Calcium 380 (ive been bringing it up gradually to get to 420. This used to be very very low) Temperature 78F I have a 28gal long tank. Tunze 9002 which runs 12 hours a day. I took a really good look at her after the testing. Her fin is getting a lot better. The pale-ness of her skin looks like its from a film on her body. No dots at all. Normal poop. Her eye is cloudy but more white than her skin is. The other eye is fine. I will try and get a picture of her but she likes to hide behind my rockwork with the peppermint shrimp. We will see what i can get. I would like to dip her tonight and get her in the QT tonight but i want to make sure the water temp doesnt fluxuate in case I have the heater on too low or too high. Currently its at 82F which is good but not all the salt has dissolved for some reason. I still need to test SG in that tank but i wanted to wait until salt was completely dissolved. Do i feed garlic pieces? How long should she be in a fw dip? 5 min? |

![]() dips should be 5 mins unless she is showing sings of stress you have to make sure the temp is the same as the tank water and the ph is the same or she will get stressed fast. I have done dips as long as 15 mins. You will have to get some garlic extreme and selcon or even garlic guard and zoecon will work or a combination of these. I do feed my fish garlic and selcon on a regular basis at least one shoot of booth in flakes with 5ml tank water soak for 5 mins and then add extra water and feed to fish. I also feed at least one other time in a week just garlic soaked flakes same way. The selcon is amino acids that fish need to stay healthy and the garlic boosts their immune system. The temp is going to fluctuate a bit that is how heaters work unfortunately. the SG should be around 1.016 to 1.020 I would start at 1.020 this allows the fishes body to not have to work so hard to keep hydrated. Hyper-salinity is at about 1.010 when returning fish to regular salinity you will have to raise the salinity slowly do it over a week so raising it by 0.002 per day maybe a bit more when you get closer to your 1.025 will be OK.
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner I have to spend time with my wife and kids , too. I help others that are new to the hobby because I didn't have hep when I started some 20+ years ago. I would get her into the QT as soon as you can and get some thing to help her heal. You could try Melifix If you know for sure that she does not have anything else wrong with her except the fin and eye. I would wager there could be an infection and that is why she is so faded. That is why I suggest a broad spectrum anti-biotic this should help with infection and if she has any parasites. I know melifix works for pop eye I have used it a couple times but do the anti-biotic first and then you could use melifix. Do not use them at the same time as one may counter act the other. here is an example in old age home they can not serve grape fruit juice as it counter acts with quite a few medications the people use. ![]() Thank you. And yes spending time with family is very important. Im focusing on this in between taking care of my 4 month old son and spending some time with my husband. My husband was at work so i waited until my son was either napping to come on here or I had him in my lap while he attempted to type on the keyboard with me.
![]() I have the salinity in the QT at 1.016. Unfortunately the lights went out in my tank and she went in her hole to sleep for the night. I had to put my son to bed too. Im up now for a feeding and to clean up the poop my dog left on the floor for me. Nice eh? Stupid dog. But i love him... but not this early in the morning when im cleaning up a mess i shouldnt. grrrrr. I will try to catch her in the morning and put her in QT. As of right now i dont have anything garlic other than food that currently has garlic in it as part of its ingredients and I have no meds. My husband has our truck and he works for the next couple of days so I wont be able to get any meds until then. ![]() Im hoping the warm water and the new life spectrum with garlic works until I can get some meds and garlic extreme or something along those lines. Im not worried about her fin any more. Its looking so much better. Its growing back faster than I thought and the whiteness at the base is going away. Im more worried with the cloudy film thats covering her entire body that started at her gills. And her cloudy eye. I know its not popeye. Ive had fish that have had it before. I wish I could identify what she has. But I cant find anything matching this discription. I love my coral beauty. Its my fav fish and shes why I got into the hobby in the first place. I hope she makes it. |

![]() They are nice fish I have had a couple over the years. her eye is cloudy for a reason it is injured. a injured eye goes cloudy because a very fine skin grows over the eye so it can heal, or she is going blind in that eye as it is dieing it goes cloudy. Going blind in an eye is normally not the case. A fish will cover it body with a film to protect it from some thing affecting a part of it or some thing in the water. A fish will also product a slime coat to try and protect its self from disease.
your alk is low what is you dkh at now? Ca being low would not do this. I would ting there has to be some thing else wrong with the tank or she has some thing, to stress her out like this. Last edited by bvlester; 09-12-2010 at 03:24 PM. |

![]() alk is 4.0 dkh is 11.2.
Good thing i didnt get a chance to catch her last night though. The heater stopped working and the QT tank temp went below 60. Its cold in our house lol. Lights arent on yet so i cant even see her. Heck i cant see any fish right now. I will take a closer look again when they come on. Her eye isint cloudy all over. Just the top half and one of the sides of her eye. Her body is cloudy all over like a thin cloudy film that started at her gills. I will get more info when lights come on. Im wondering if this could be delayed stress from being transported from lfs to here? I dont know. Gotta wait a few hours for water to warm up again now before moving her... If i can catch her first. Im wondering if i should pick up some activated carbon too and see if that will do anything like improve health of corals. There may be some chemical warfare going on. They are recent additions and were pretty stressed from a 2 day shipment. |
