Default old dead live rock

hi, my friend gave me some dead live rocks thats been sitting in his backyard for about a yr. can i still used that in my reef tank, and what would i have to do to it b4 i put it in.? do i have to soak it in hot water or something? cuz it has spider web on it and stuff. And will it become live again after its been in my tank for a while? Theres like 50lbs of it, it used to be in his 90g fowler tank.

How big is your tank? You should hose it down and then stick it in a separate tank or container of sw with a few pieces of LR to seed it, but it could take months to turn dead rock into LR. Unless you tank is huge (300+g with 250-300 lbs of LR in it already), I wouldn't put it in the tank yet until its seeded & such. It might not be so good for an existing tank to dump that much dead rock in.

I would put it into a rubbermaid trashcan filled with saltwater, a heater, a powerhead, a piece of liverock out of your tank and cure it for a couple of weeks before adding to your display tank.
