Default monti cap help

Did some rearranging and after time and growth the button polyps starting to kill back some of the monti. Moved around but started to get some algae growing. Thought could try to keep the algae off by gently brushing with a toothbrush and the coral might regrow but looks like I'm causing more die-back.

Since the monti always regrew from when I've broken it, wondering if I should try chipping off along the edge where the algae is?

Picture is a bad angle as these separation between everything but shows damage.

Likely it will grow back but breaking the dead bits off will help it repair faster IMO.
