![]() Red Sea ? So interesting, some of the older players may remember the startling numbers in their disfavour, in a particular salt study, discussed much on r.a.m.r. Interestingly enough, the links to that particular study don't seem to work, and the remaining link searched isn't the same. Any oldies on here care to share their thoughts on that one ?

![]() If reef crystals is in the top and IO is the bottom, IO it cant be that bad.

![]() hmmm.. amazing how you can twist numbers to end up with what you want.. two previous studies showed IO as one of the best..

![]() I don't know on this one - eric borneman oversaw the study... If you read up on the details, I'd be pretty surprised if the results were skewed to prop up one, or discredit another. Lets face it reefers did this study, not manufacturers.
However, it's starting to look like this is an overall rating, depending on what you were growing/keeping - it may have done better or worse than another salt. |

![]() I used to use Red Sea then after boxing day sales I switched to I.O and I did notice a difference right away thought the corals were mad at me and they never really fully recovered from it and it been like 9 months, and I got cyano not long after that I never had before... and still have. So when my last pail is done I was already planning to switch back to Red Sea.....I was thinking about switching to Reef Cystals after what Rusty shown me on the pail saying it works the best with tap water.

![]() Steve you have to go check out the past 2 issues of Reef Keeping mag, Eric and Kim did a couple articles that outlined the experiment, there's nothing that has been done this well before. I think they did as much as they could to maximize the experiment's data set with the resources they had. I'm really looking forward to seeing the quantitative data.
I just wonder what the result of this is going to be. Doing the study once is going to yield interesting info but I wouldn't say definitive. If you performed the experiment say 10 times or even once with 10 samples of each salt you would have a much better chance of identifying flukes that could have thrown the results way out. I'm looking at the pictures of the IO tank and I can think of a half dozen things that could have spoiled it. I'm sure that the authors will try and make that point but I'm afraid it will be lost. I can just see every post somebody makes with cyano problems being answered with "IO gives you cyano, switch salts" over and over again. Maybe it really does have something out of wack though. |

![]() I dunno, I've used IO forever and have never had cyano problems. That said, I currently use other salts with the same success.

![]() I use the Seachem salt....I like it...don't know how much difference it has made except that my levels are a bit more stable with less additive....no cyano ever....interesting study though!
