It is trully sad to hear about this.
I am sorry for his wife and kid.
But in truth I am amazed he lived as long as he did.
The guy was insane, I think that is what we all loved so much about him.

Kricky Mate, well miss ya.

I have a lot of sympathy for his family, but he put himself in harm's way too often to live long. In my mind's eye, I imagine he was "wrangling" the ray when it got him. All due respect, and not meaning to speak ill of the dead, but the man was reckless.

Guess he died what he loved doing not to be taken by disease or anything...... just surprised it never happened sooner

I don't know if we will ever see another person with as much enthusiasm and passion as Steve. The man obviously had a lot self confidence in dealing with the wild and it was so entertaining to watch. It is so unfortunate for the world and more so for his friends and family that he has left this earth while in his prime.

My condolences to his family. This is quite a loss.

Sad to see him go.
He got so many young people interested in nature and our world.
He was not anymore reckless or insane than a dog catcher chasing down a rabid dog is. He was a proffessional who knew exactly what he was doing and what the animals he was working with were doing / capable of.

Rays rarely sting unless the feel very threatened, the article says the were just filming a documentary and swiming amongst them when one decided to sting him, and unfortnately it hit him in the heart. Anywhere else and he might have survived.

My condolences to his family.

Wow. I'm just stunned to hear this. Agreed, not too surprising to see him go before his time, in a thing like this, but nevertheless still a very colourful personality who will be greatly missed by many (myself included).
