Can't you pick up the hose and follow it back to the pump, emptying it on the way?

I do the 3 carboys out, 3 carboys in routine, its hard on the back and I've been thinking about moving to a pump but just haven't gotten around to doing it

You can try to purge it with air, that is if you got a compressor.

I use about 35 feet of hose to pump the water from my mixing tank to the sump for water changes. I just disconnect at the pump, then coil up the hose draining the residual water into the sump as I go.
