here is a question. what size of a sump will do for this tank???
also, this may sound like a stupid question but will my mag 18 just drain the sump or will the 2 holes drilled in my tank keep up with it??? (can you tell this is my first sump!!!) lol

Congrats! A 25 or 30 gallon sump should be fine.... Seeing as how you have a 24" wide tank.... go to Canadian Tire and get one of their storage totes, reinforced with a lid, for a sump. I bought one for $25.00 (25 gal) and it works like a charm... easy to drill & put fittingson etc etc etc.... definitely the cheap way to go...

Just do a little reading on pump flow & overflow capacity.... I think 1" returns are good for up to 600 gph.... and the Mag 18 will pump 1800 gph at zero head.... but probably more like 1200gph at 4' of head...

If you are going to spend the money on a nice 120gal tank, dont cheap out with a rubbermaid sump. Do it right and make it out of glass or acrylic.

Remember, with a sump the goal is always to make it as big as possible.

If it is a sump you'll never see, rubbermaid is the way to go. Glass or acrylic would be nice, but it would a spendthifty thing to do. Harder to work with and a higher investment.

As for the pump, it depends on the size of bulkheads you'll be using and how your plumbing is set up. 600-800GPH is a rule of thumb for 1" bulkhead drains though. If I were in your position, however, I would get a small return pump and jack up flow using closed loops, Seios and whatnot.

they are 1 inch bulkheads. The thing it that my mom ordered me a mag 18 for xmas that should be here soon....

also, is that rule for 1 bulkhead??? because if it is, i have 2, 1 inch BHs. so i should be doing 1200-1600gph right?

Nice looking tank there Nanoreef. Why not get one of the old tank from Jamie's store for a sump.
When i had my 280 going I used a 45 gallon rubbermaid tub its easy to use and drill into, But if you start getting micro bubbles like i did it hard to get rid of. Give Dan out in Shilo a call he will make you a sump for a round 30 bucks if that. ANd if you are planning on getting a topp off thur a RO unit its easier again to drill thou plastic.

Pop over to my house and take a look at my 170 that i have going with the sump setup to get a few idea's are you going to put this inwall or on a stand in the house.

If you are making a canopy think about having the unit sitting on top of the canop y so your canopy don't heat up .

mike

give me a call im on xmas leave now just sorting out my lights today and the trim around the tank.

-Ok this is how the tank will run you are going to fill the tank complete including the overflows.

-Then you will have your sump all plumbed and fill that to a certain point where you want it to be say 10" high.

-Then what you can do is have the return pipe plumbed and then you can either have it going full flow with durso pipes on the overflow pipe i find the durso's allow i little bit more flow IMO.

- Then you can either tee off the mag back to the sump with a ball valve.

that is what i would do...

the pump will probably be to strong unless you tee it off ..

AND no it will not drain your sump .

call me and i will explain it to you ok.

if you dont tee if off, u will probably get a sucking noise.
