Default Should I use bio balls in my canister filter?

I have a 90 gallon with live rock & soft corals. I have a great protein skimmer (Aqua C Ramora pro) and several power heads.

I want to clear up the water a bit so can I run my rena filstar canister filter on my tank for up to a week and then remove it before the nitrates start to build up?

Also, what is the general opinion about bio balls. Are people adding them to protein skimmers units or canister filters?

Any opinions out there? I would be grateful!

Thanks, Raquel

Pack it full of filter floss and let 'er rip. As long as you replace or wash the media all the time the nitrate factory problem is essentially avoided.
