Aerobic bacteria colonize the sponge, providing a bacterial substrate to facilitate the nitrogen cycle. The filter also traps larger waste particles, mechanically cleaning the water. Can also be used with either airstone or powerhead. 5) Black gravels - 40lbs - $15, bring a big bucket or a strong bag... 6) 20 gallon sump.
