noob question here....is c02 used to control ph?

inside a calcium reactor it is used to lower the ph within the reactor in order to dissolve the media.

can it not be used to adjust ph right in the system?

thinking of buying an aquarium controller, says it can control ph.

does that mean i hook up a pump to a ph buffer solution and the controller turns on pump to buffer ph if needed? or is there another way to control ph
