Default Q RE Coco worms

After my tank crash I was just trying to see if anything was salvageable so I basically brought whatever coral I had to my friend's extra 120 gal. The two heads of my coco worm were in place and the worm was still responding moving into and to the top of the tube... but... today my friend told me he found 1 head on the sand bed... so I was just wondering if coco worms can eject their tops like feather dusters or is it game over for them?
