I put it into a nylon and then inside my overflow box so all the water has to pass through it.

So in my case if i'm running a stand pipe how is that an option?

My tank drain goes into a bucket and I have a few holes cut in the bottom/side of the bucket and I place my carbon in the path of those holes. Very similar idea I suppose.

Well, Carbon works best when water is some what forced through the media. I use a HOT Magnum . I'm sure it works better than just throwing it in a high flow area .
