Position: Summer Aquarist – Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre - Sidney BC

The Organization
The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre is an award-winning aquarium and education centre focused the marine life of the Salish Sea. It is a not-for-profit organization located on the waterfront in Sidney, BC.

Responsibilities:
As a summer aquarist with the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre you will assist our head aquarist, assistant aquarist, and team of volunteers with their daily duties. Duties include water quality monitoring, exhibit maintenance and cleaning, food preparation, collection of animals, and record keeping.

Qualifications we are seeking:

Knowledge of fish behavior, general biology, husbandry and nutritional requirements
Desire to maintain cleanliness and order in support areas and habitats
Be comfortable working unsupervised and following precise routines
Proven guest/public interaction and presentation skills
Proven written and verbal communication skills
Proven attention to detail Willingness to work weekends and holidays Must be able to lift, push or pull 50 lbs. Satisfactory criminal record check.

Other desired qualifications would be an asset

Scuba certified - Scientific Diver level 1
Experience in the field of aquarium husbandry or similar field Experience with a home or commercial aquariums
Experience collecting and transporting marine animals
Experience with participation in public education programs
Valid BC Drivers License (or equivalent)
