![]() I have a 100 gallon sump in place in switching to saltwater and I need to know where i should be adding baffles to make this work with an inline skimmer and refugium?
Its 5 foot by 18" and 24" high with a 2 inch intake at the far end about 3 inches from the bottom, The in pipes are dual 2" from the far left with an eggcrate grid for the foamies then a whole chamber i used for bio balls, a 1 inch space at the bottom of that chamber that enters to the rest of the sump...... I know i need a few baffles but Im trying to figure out from the other pics on here how high and exactly where to put em for good flow and avoiding sand/rubble in my pump???? And advice is gold to me so thank you guys in advance ![]() ![]() |

![]() Im drilling a 2" on the same side as my main pump for the skimmer pump and I will be running the return back to the left end of the sump to try and avoid bubbles, Also there are 2 spaces for eggcrate right next to the first chamber for foam and or baffles.....

![]() This is what I do with my simp: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume...bafflesart.htm
Let's you play around with different configurations very easily. Put your refugium after your skimmer or you just end up skimming out the little critters you are trying to make. add a few baffles (over-under baffles) to remove bubbles before going into the return section. |

![]() Silicone the first baffle (10" or so tall) to the bottom of the tank so that there is a big enough skimmer "box" for your skimmer sit inside. That will create a stable water level for the skimmer to operate. Then say 2' away, add a second baffle one inch off the bottom so the water can flow under & keep the bubbles away from the return pump. That's how I build all my sumps. You can add more baffles but in a 5' sump, not necessary. Fill the second chamber between the baffles with chaeto & rock & the bubbles will get trapped.
Hope that helps. Anthony

![]() BTW, sand down the edges of the baffles so you don't cut yourself. Old window glass works.

![]() The skimmer is inline so I will have a 2nd bulkhead on the right side aswell so All i have to worry about is the gfo, carbon reactor pumps and the bubbles at the very end of the sump. with a 2 foot tall sump should I go higher than 10" for the top of the baffles that will contain the refugium section? and bubble trap baffles will also keep the refugium stuff intact?

![]() So.... If im reading all this right I should drill the hole for my skimmer on the left side right under the "in" pipes and put a bubble trap set of baffles in front of that chamber as well as infront of the pump bulkhead and my refugium should stay put?...?

![]() I ordered the glass for monday, 12" water depth should be ok i hope...
im going to put one infront of the first chamber to get the water in the refugium to 12" then a bubble trap infront of the pump intake.... probably 3" away? or should I give it more space? |
