![]() I'm picking up a 150g tank on the weekend. When I went to look at it (it's used, but looks great!) I noticed the sump on it is only 22g. What size would be recommended on a tank that size?

![]() Generally speaking the bigger the better. I would go as big as you can fit/afford.

![]() 22g is far too small.
I would try to fit at least a 3' or 4' stand (something in the range of a 50g breeder and up). That will give you more room to fit a decent sized skimmer and all the other equipment (ie. heater, return pump, various media reactors). If its a 6' tank, I would go with a 4' sump if you can fit it in your stand. My 210g & 220g (6' x 2' footprints) for instance have a 75g & 90g wide as sumps. Sumps this size should be 18" or so tall (not too tall or makes it harder to service equipment inside the sump). Preferably, sumps should also be wider than 12" to make it easier to position the skimmer. Hope this helps. Anthony

![]() Thanks for the feedback.
The tank is 48"x24"x30" so, unless I can get a wide 36" tank, I'll have to get a 33g for a sump. Anyone have one they don't need? |

![]() 40g breeders work well for 3' sumps.

![]() Just keep in mind to design/size your sump to accommodate the water flowing back from your display tank when the return pump gets shut off.

![]() 33g tank is a poor choice imo because it is too tall and narrow. A 40 gallon breeder (36x18x16") would be a perfect for under your sump or a standard 50 gallon (36x19x19").
Agreed! |

![]() My 8' 165 gal has a 46"x18"x22" sump with a water volume running of 65 gal. I have a refugium, 2 skimmers, 2 tlf phosban's as well as a separate return and input compartment.
