Default odd question about plumbing

Ok so currently my overflow has a 2" pipe draining to the sump. This has a "stockman" style cap on it as thats all there is room for. There is no opportunity to drill another hole and do a herbie style setup, nor is there room to fit a durso style fitting on the pipe. For the size of the hole, the overflow box is pretty tiny and the eurobracing really restricts what you can fit in there (including your hands).

Lately (lets just say in the last 24 hours, probly longer but I'm just noticing it now) the overflow has been surging. I can see the water in the overflow box surging up and down within about an inch or so. With the removal of the stockman cap, the water flows into the pipe and ever 10 seconds or so its like a bubble bursting and water ejects itself out of the pipe upwards, splashing on the eurobracing. There is a fair bit of salt creep on the eurobracing and surrounding area so I would imagine this has been happening for awhile, with the stockman cap on (there are 4 holes drilled in the stockman cap so the water ejects through there.

My question is: has anyone ever drilled another hole farther down their overflow pipe to allow for "extra" water to be taken in?

With my dart running full open, the 2" pipe can handle the flow (for the most part) but the stockman fitting restricts rhe flow somewhat so technically the flow from the dart should be throttled back (although I don't do that, I like it at the max).

I won't be building anything fancy for this so if this isn't an option, I will likely have to just throttle back the dart and be done with it.

I haven't done what you're asking, but a durso does have two holes drilled in the side of the pipe. I think they're syphon breaks though, not to add more water flow. I don't know if drilling extra holes will fix your flushing problem, sounds like a backpressure issue caused by air in the line or something. How deep is your drain pipe's exit in the sump? I had a flushing problem when I first set up my system and figured out that I had my pipe exits too deep in the sump water.

Is the end going into the sump under water? sounds like you are trapping air and need to vent it, I had the same problem, raising the end to just above the sump level cured one and a vent hole drilled just above the waterline (sump) cured the other, I can try to get you some pics to see what I mean.

Hmm, interesting, I"ll have to investigate that further. Currently my pipe does exit into the water, I"ll have to have a go at that. Thanks!

I had a similar problem and drilled a hole in the pipe just above the sumps waterline and the surging problem was fixed. A small bit of water does come out the hole, hence close to the sumps water line to catch the water.
