![]() recently bought a 180 gal off a guy moving, with the set up came a few fish two maroon clowns,a puffer, a brown and yellow foxface,a blue damsel, pajama cardinal, and a small unknown wrasse in which we are still trying to identify.all went well with the move and took our time getting the new guys in their home acclimating them slowly.obviously the move was very stressful for them but they all seem to be doing fine except for this morning i noticed over night the fox face is losing his tail the damsel is at my house in my tank so its def not him,ill post some pics when i can get my camera charged but id say 40% of his tail is now see through or missing what should i do??any ideas if its disease or stress or being picked on by other fish??thanks

![]() Who else is in with him right now? If it was overnight I would suspect someone was picking at him, particularly since he's the new guy in the tank. Skin flukes can also can cause fin erosion but I don't think 40% in one night kind of speed.

![]() in with him now are the pair of maroons, puffer, and unknown wrasse(2")all the fish have lived together for a while and are quite large the tank is well established just got moved across the city, they were in buckets and me and the girl friend spent alot of time slowly changing water back and forth before they went back into tank(about 4 hours because of the size of the bucket)we didnt put them in any order and they seemed fine that night and yesterday but this morning his tail is just about gone,i figure disease takes time to set in, so it has to be another fish the puffer hangs around him alot but doesnt show any signs of aggression at all, and the clowns pick on them selves so their always busy lol. the heaters are on low and there isnt any very sharp pieces of rock, the lights are 4 t5's and 3 metal halide and are about 7" off the water.ill be taking water tests today and some pics to post.i didnt put the damsel in their yet untill everyone finds their own territory again since i changed the aquascaping.

![]() I would think it was your puffer chewing on his tail. puffers are known to nip any longer tails or dorsal fins.

![]() I would say either the puffer or the female maroon they are more aggressive and if they have pick a new territory they will defend it to the death. That is just the way they are almost and clown is that way but especially maroons, I have 2 medium sized perculas that will bite me if my hand is in the tank longer than they like it to be. Momma has taken small bite out of my hand, I think she had laid eggs some where near there or some thing it was near their Nem so that could have been why also. I can put my have near the Nem for a while but then after that short time that is that she is no me like flies to honey.
To help with the tail try adding some melifix as per directions on the bottle it should help promote groth and prevent an infection. Marine fish when injered are prone to infection and fungus rot of the fins when they have been injered. Bill Last edited by bvlester; 04-18-2010 at 10:51 PM. |
