Default plumbing question

i have started to do most of the plumbing for my tank but would like know how you do water coming from tank into sump. do i run pipe close to bottom or leave it up about 1/2 way up in sump ?or is there a better way?

You will want the pipe to go past, the water level, Its too noisy if the water is splashing on top of the water level of your sump water.

mine drains are about 4" below the water line (6" above the floor of the sump), gives me lots of room to slip a filter sock over them.
