Drain Size

Just wondering, I'll be running a Herbie style drain (main drain, and emergency drain)....will 1 1/2" bulkheads do it for the drains? Looking at having about 1200 gph to go through there. Or should I go 2"?

I don't run a herbie, but I do have dual 2" drains with about 1200 GPH running through them. In my case the 2" is overkill and I wish I would have went with 1-1/2". It would also help keep your plumbing a little more tidy, those 2" unions are huge. This chart may also help:

1.5" from RC calculator is good for 1300gph, but staying 1.5" or if you did go 2" for the primary, could consider 1" or 1.5" for emergency.

1.5" should be good for 1200 gph. I would keep both drains the same size.

1200 gph? Setting up a big tank?

Be careful with high turnovers...tend to get lots of micro bubbles into the display if you run too much flow through the sump.

Thanks everyone.... I think I should be safe with two 1 1/2" drains. Just wanted to double check before I drill, going to make my overflow box this weekend.
