Default Skimmer in sump question

My skimmer (coralife 220) is inside of a compartment in my sump that is slightly larger than the skimmer itself. The in and out of the skimmer are right next to each other, which is right next to the in pipe from the overflow, and I worry that a lot of the water is just cycling from the output of the skimmer into the input, while the 'new' water just passes by. Is this a problem? Is it worth separating the in and out more? My in pump is right at the surface to maximize the bubbles, but so is the outlet, to minimize bubbles!

thoughts?

[is this skimmer to weak for my tank anyways?]
