Default Is my Laptop Infected? (Or Vista Bug??) Computer Gurus I need you.

****SEE BELOW POST... IN THE PROCESS OF FIXING*****

Not a severe problem, but a bothersome one.

It started yesterday, a program of mine just all of a sudden was gone. I went to open it , and it tells me it can't be found and I need to browse for the file. Re-install, same thing. I can deal with that... the program is not important really.

My real issue is with Spybot Search & Destroy. I performed an update and did a scan (because of my odd PC activity) , scan came out clean. Here's where it gets weird, when I went to Immunize in Spybot, it says I don't have administration priveleges?? I went to user accounts and I am indeed setup as the admin. (it's my laptop!) . So it tells me I can't perform this action, and it says the following "This action may not be performed completely since you are not an administrator. If you want this performed for all users, please run this application elevated as an administrator"

Weird. So after all that, it still performs the action requested after clicking OK.

I can't figure it out... missing programs, no admin. priveleges (or so it SAYS) and just weirdness in general IMO .. I don't know if this is a Vista bug, Spybot bug, or I am infected. I have ran Norton yesterday which found a tracking cookie but took care of that. Everything else comes out clean. Dida spybot scan, also clean. Checked msconfig for anything out of the ordinary, but nothing I could see.

*edit* after re-reading , the error msg. reads "this action may not be performed completely" ... so maybe that's why the action still performed, just not entirely.

Bahh, I will put this on hold for now as I am on the Spybot forums. This error seems to be popular, but I still believe there is something fishy going on with my PC. Hopefully they can be of some assistance... I can't figure out though all the strange activity. Scans come clean.

Have you disabled UAC (user access control) or tried right clicking on spybot and using the "run as" option?

I feel like a newb, could you give me a brief description of UAC? I have heard the term enough times (especially with vista?)

I did use the "run as admin" option [after going to spybot forums] that fixed the problem for immunizing.. Just to add, I also couldn't install the program I mentioned that kept dissapearing to my C drive, again, gave me admin errors. So maybe this has something to do with UAC? I can't figure out why the program goes away.

UAC is user access control, or what causes your screen to grey out except for the window that pops up and asks you if you're sure you want to do something.

It was one of the first things I turned off when I was running vista. More of a pain in the butt for an experienced computer user, but a big plus for the type of people who believe that some rich african doctor wants to send them TEN MILLION US DOLLARS.
