i havent decided on the sump part yet... . how much would one run me and what are the pros/cons of it? the light is optional at this point but when i buy one i want it to be a good one. i may start out with a FOWLR tank so the light may come later... depending on how good of a deal i can find.

Default sump

In my experiance there are no cons to having a sump. The sump works as another tank below your main tank where you can keep mechanical filteration (sponge, foam, filter material, protien skimmer) and biological filteration in a refugium such as live rock, rubble, macro algae, sand or mud and some inverts. Some people have turned their sumps into gardens with mangrove trees, and even seahorse displays. You can make it as simple or complex as you would like. Typically a sump requires a drilled aquarium but there are ways around that as well. The best suggestion I have is to do alot of research before you get started so you have somewhat of a game plan. I have a 45gal sump/refugium which will be up for sale soon if you are interested I'm in Calgary quite often. GOOD LUCK!
