Thumbs down Fire On My Porch

I burned a citronella candle earlier today. Lit it with a match and threw it on some dirt in an old plant pot. Later, blew out the candle and went to Banff.

Four hours later....arrive home to a toxic, burning plastic smell in my apartment. The entire plastic planter had melted and was flaming on my porch. I'm on the fourth floor, mind you. The dirt was practically melted together and red hot.

I'm just bamboozled. A single match? WTF.

The fire burned through the plastic type covering and burned into the wood a little bit. I guess my DIY skills are about to get a crash course in post-fire porch repair.

after 4 hours your lucky to have come home to just a toxic smell rather than a smouldering apartment building. Who would have thought though? i probably would have been guilty of the same- glad everythign turned out alright/.

I second that, I'm glad you're ok and that it wasn't worse.

I thought that was an apartment building in Calgary (re. the peat moss).

Drew, I'm so relieved for you that nothing worse happened! Weird that the dirt melted.

The big apartment fire in Edmonton was ruled as arson... I think Tony is right.... the fire peat moss thing was in Calgary

I saw a film clip on the news yesterday of a playground in Texas that spontaneously combusted. The wood chips on the ground caught fire due to the ambient heat. They know it was spontaneous because the playground had surveillance cameras and no one was seen on camera for hours prior. The whole thing went up.

Wow. Crazy. So, I guess I'm not surprised that a match could ignite such dry soil. Duh...what a stupid thing to do (in retrospect). But who'd have thought?!
