Default How to start a Reef club?

Hi guys/gals,

I live in PEI and we have a very hard time getting anything here. Right now I am the only person that I know of that has a reef tank around here other than the LFS with the $90 mushroom (size of a nickel, yeah right but she is just trying to cover her costs). I want some info from anyone that either runs one or has started one in the past. I haven't had a chance to talk to the lady at the LFS yet but I am assuming that having her on board will make things easier. I can't see anyway that this would hurt a LFS, the more group orders that are done, the more people that need stuff, the better for her. Is there any other hints and tips that you guys can offer to help me get this started up. I would love to have a group of loacls that we could meet with and swap frags and tips etc.

Thanks for your time and help.

Perhaps ask her if you can stick a small poster or notice in her LFS to invite anyone interested in saltwater keeping in general & reefing in particular to contact you. Who knows how many anonymous reefers are in your area. It may just be you, it may be a dozen, but at least it'll get the word out.

BTW, most places don't really have a formal reefing club yet or are just starting out, but the advantage they have is knowing a lot of the local reefers. Your first step, IMO, is finding out if there are other reefers & if so, getting in contact with them.

Once you get a few contacts, then you can all decide whether to go through the extra trouble of organizing a formal club or to just keep in touch with each other occasionally.

Hope that helps,

Anthony

If searching for others through that website doesn't pan out, I was going to suggest asking the lady at your LFS a favour. Create a simple pamplet with your number on it, and ask her to distribute it to all SW customers.

Can't hurt. Good Luck!
