Default Which pump for my 190g?

I'm in research mode for a pump for my 190g. I would like recomendations including models and prices if possible. The tank will have a sump and I can go with either a submersible pump or dry pump. I'm still a newbie so please include any info you think is helpful. I'm not made of money but I also don't want to buy junk.

Thanks for any replies

PS I will consider buying used as well

Does the 190 have 2 overflows or just 1? And also, is the pump being used for a closed loop or sump return, or are you asking for both uses?

Sequence Reeflo pumps kick a lot of behind.

The tank has one corner overflow and one return. As for closed loop or sump return I'm still a newbie and I'm not sure what you mean.

I pretty much asked the same question about a year ago.

A closed loop is basically pumping water out of the main tank and then back into the main tank. A continuous "loop" that is closed (ie: not open to anything else, like a sump). The purpose is for water circulation.

A sump return, which is what I think you are looking for here based on your first post, is just that....ie: the pump used to return water from the sump back to the main tank.

As for pump recommendations....sorry....I don't have enough experience with various types to offer an opinion. For my return I just use an AquaClear 901, which is essentially a big honkin' powerhead.

HTH and cheers,

This is how I'm picturing things. Water goes through the overflow and into my sump, my skimmer sits in the sump, water is then pumped out of the sump back into the tank. Is this correct? Also, what specs should I look for when considering a pump?

Look at what flow rate you want or your overflow/plumbing can handle. Remember to use the gph minus head loss (loss of flow due to the height the water must be pumped up to get back into your tank).

You also have to decide whether to go with in-sump return pump (like a Mag or Quiet One) or an external pump (Mak4, Sequence, etc.)
