![]() Well, I've been pulling my hair out for the last couple days ......
![]() I was sick and tired of looking into my 20g and seeing nothing but pumps and equipment in the tank...So I decided to take some drastic measures and tear down the tank and drill for an overflow. After talking with Jack well over a year ago about it, I came up with an idea I thought would work.. I was wrong...It was the loudest thing I have ever heard ![]() ![]() You can see by way of the pics, what I have done. I drilled the back. and syliconed in a piece of black acrylic. Being a small tank, I didnt want to put a big overflow box in there. So I glued in the piece along the back on slight angle just to create an over flow and not cut off light to the back of the tank. I glued together a sump and added a mag9 for a return with valves to control flow. I fired the thing up and thought I was living inside a toilet. ![]() ![]() I thought the, somewhat durso, was going to work but it still gurgled. It turned out I drilled the top air hole to big on the duso so I put a piece of tape over it and put a couple pin holes in it until I found the right air/water flow rate and it worked alot better. Still a bit noisy but not bad.. Any Idea's ???? ![]() Hey BT I have the same over flow Idea as you. The angled piece anyway. I attached a small box on the outside of the back of the take and built a derso in that box. Works great. If you want you can drop by and check it out

![]() Hey Rob,
1st: Took you a year?! ![]() 2nd: Mag 9 is over-kill! ![]() You'll need to do what Jason did... he built a box on the back of the tank where he put a durso stand pipe inside there. The bulkhead just transfers the water from the overflow to the durso box. I wish I had pics of my setup. I have a 12" routerd slot in the back of my acrylic tank that waterfalls into a 15"x15"x5" box behind the tank... and in there I have a 1-1/2" durso standpipe in there. I have a Velocity T-3 at full throttle and can't hear a thing. Its perfect because it surface skims but I don't see and overflow box or anything... its like "magic" ![]() I would of loved to do the same thing with a glass tank but it just wasn't feasable so I sold my glass 120g to a Canreef buddy. I remember seeing Sanjay Joshi do this same thing on his 180g glass tank but he got it done at a sandblasting place... but even I'm not gonna go THAT hardcore. ![]() You just gotta modify the idea a bit but should work great! Good start. |

![]() The only missing part, is the elbow on the front, thats why it still gurgles.
Its still taking air into the bulkhead. The only air you want goin in, is through the hole you drilled. Just place an elbow on the inside of the tank, facing down and it will complete the full durso. It should quiet things up for you. ![]()

![]() The horizontal overflow is the one Calfo been pushing. He has his own section on Reefcentral with quite a few related posts on that design:
