Low temps for my tanks are 78-79F. Temp when I get concerned is 82-ish.

I am still comfortable in tank temp of 82-84. but if it gets above 85 its time to turn on the chiller.

when my light is off my temp is 78, never goes past 81 since i hooked up a fan. point the fan at water surface if possible, works good

72 is low for a reef tank, setting it higher should not effect your peak temperature very much. What I am saying is (for example) 80-84 is a better range then 72-83. Try setting your heaters a little higher and see if you can minimize the temperature swing.

My tank runs between 80-82. I found that when I was adjusting my heating system it did not matter how low they were set, the tank would still reach the same peak temperature.

Maybe get a fan to help cool the tank when the lights are on. My tanks are near windows in a basement suite & I once hit 86F before I started using fans. Then it maxed at 81F. Its not frying the fish but the fact that higher water temp reduces dissolved oxygen content in the water & sw already holds less oxygen than fw so in the heat of summer, the risk is suffocating the fish I usually jack up the flow & add an air pump when it really heats up. I also change my photoperiod so the lights are off in the hottest period of the day & on later at night after it cools off.
