changing sandbeds

so I've really wanted a sand bottom instead of crushed coral..would it be detrimental to the tank to change it while it's "live"? or would it be best to rip down the whole tank and "start new"?

do it "live", but change 1/3 at a time. Wait 3 weeks between thirds for the bacteria to culture the new sand.
