Default need help on the thickness of glass

ok i'm looking at the prices on tanks and here is the problem. I have a friend who makes tanks and he told me tha 1/2 is over kill on a tank. i can go with out a center brace. and its over 300 bones for a 36x20x20

now i can get 6 mm which is 1/4 and have that for a tnak for 150 with taxes my friend says it will work fine. and to drill a holes for a 1" bulk its 15 dollars so 165 for everything.

Or i can go 10mm 3/8" for around 250 what would you guys do with that.

mike

oh ya i'm going to be running a 1x250 20K MH and 2x36" actinic on a 40 w glo mat (40w) ballast. with a 2" sand bed and a prism pro skimmer and a mak 4 return in the base ment below the tank the head will be around 8-9'
any ideas on the setup

I would defiantly not go 1/4. and as for the 3/8, 1/2 is only about 50.00 more so I would go with the 1/2 personally. My tank is 36 X 24 x 25 and it is out of 3/8 and works with out a brace but 1/2" would be a Little more comforting.

Default glass thickness

The glass on my 90gal is 1cm (apx 0.5in)
The brace came loose (poor repair job, before me) and the front (back too probably) bowed out about 1inch at the top (only 24inches vs your 20),
really made me very nervous. I thought it was going to break for sure!. Also in reef tanks there is a lot of flow, so there is additional forces on the glass and don't forget thinner seams too,as well as heat from the MH.
Soooo splurge and sleep at night spend the extra $50!! IMHO

Must agree with Island Reefer. If you "save" the $50 & wake up one morning or come home to a flooded room & stranded corals/fish, did you really save anything? It may work out & nothing happens, but it's like buying insurance. Sure you can save the insurance money & hope nothing happens, but if it does you're going to be POed & it's going to cost you way more in the long run. $50 is the price of one good coral. How much is a whole tank of dead stuff worth?

Again, just MHO.
