Eheim 2227 wet / dry cannister filter, wet / dry not working

Everything works but the wet / dry attachment, just a continuous flow of water, no surge. Can sometimes establish a wave function if the intake is closed more than halfway. Everything is clean and there are no leaks. Anybody have experience with this?
