Anyone use canister filters anymore, or wet/dry only? (Poll)

I was wondering if everyone here uses wet\dry filters. Does anyone use canister filters anymore as their main filtration source (with a protein skimmer)?

Do you think a trickle filter and liverock are a must to keep a marine aquarium?

NO trickle filters are not necessary in a reef tank, they are nitrate factories.
Some, probably alot of people just use live rock and a refugium and good water movement. Although it isn't a MUST it is in my humble opinion the best form of filtration. Live rock works well because it will have aerobic and anoxic regions where different bacteria will thrive, each bacteria taking care of different nutrients. The more porous the live rock the better. Some people are getting away from the 1-2 Lbs of live rock/gallon rule but they probably don't feed their aquariums heavy.

Canister filters can be used but again the sponge will become a nitrate factory. A canister filled with live rock rubble would be great....

If you are running a fish only tank, then you probably want to go with as much mechanical filtering as you can afford (depending on the fish).

It's a good question and I think you will get some differing opinions.

Michael, what type of marie tank are you talking about? FO may use either type of mechanical filtration, but most people with a reef don't use any mechanical filtration.
