Default Washing machine question (Kenmore problem)

Any one out there have a Kenmore elite washing machine (1999-2000 model)

We are having some weird problems with ours and the Sears repairman said it was the motor.. They want $400 to repair. See below for the info

Here is the story,

Since the minor leak (not ever time), nor a significant amount. The other day the wife went to wash close.. it started to fillm then would stop and do nothing. I tried it and sure enough it would fill a llittle bit and then stop. She left to go wash close at my parents place, I got the waster to wash a load of close,

We had repair guy out today (Monday Dec 27) he said since the pump was leaking, and we did not have someone in sooner, that the water leaked into the motor and has fried the motor (well I find this hard to believe ) I did some researched on the Net and found it could be the timer or the Fill Sensor.. The pump is a separate issue. This guy (who is a Sears repairman) Said its going to cost $400 to fix.. Is the motor involved in filling the washer?

why don't you call in another appliance repair man for an estimate.

We are going to do that as well. just asking if someone else had any ideas or the same model of washer that had problems.

when you said it was leaking was it the pump or when it wsa filling? as far as I know there is no pump to fill only to epty the washer so I would say that is the meater that mesures how much water goes in the machien but I have little knoladge of thouse things. just offering my $0.02 hope you get better news from the next guy.

I had a similar problem with, believe it or not, a Kenmore washing machine. It would sometimes work without any problems, and sometimes fill part way and then stop, and sometimes, nothing at all. I had a repair guy come check it out and found that it was just a lose connection/wire, and thankfully, showed me where. If your's is the same as mine, (no longer have it, so I can't check the model number for you), it may be the same problem, (although, do get the leak fixed, as it can do a number on your motor if the water finds it's way there)).

To fix it, (if it's the same problem), drain the water out of it, (just drop the drain line into a bucket and it will drain itself). Flip it on it's back, or at least back far enough so you can get underneath it. There will be a male/female connector near the front, right side of the washer, (really obvious). Make sure it's pushed all of the way in. If it is, then, (here is where it starts to get really techincal ), jiggle each wire a little, as the wire itself may have a short/break in it, (I was too lazy to pull the wire out and fix it, so, every couple of months, I'd tip it back and jiggle the red wire and viola, it was fixed). That's all it took for me to fix it. Good luck, and hopefully, this will work for you as well.

Since I am in the process of purchasing a new washer, I posed the question you asked of a couple of salesmen. The concensus was that the motor has nothing to do with filling the washer.

Thanks all I knew the motor had nothing to do with filling, that is just common sense Even the lady I talked to at the Sear repair line even said it was the timer (the beginning of the cycle) as the rest of the cycle works flawlessly.

another guy is coming out to check the pump.. I do no believe there is a problem with the pump either, as the leaking only happens every so often, and not every time, nor is there alot of water

I had a small prob with my kenmore washer. It was the electo water valve that let the water in. It was a $10 part and about half an hour of my time....then a year later the timmer went....then the motor went about 1 year after. not bad for doing laundry for 6 people for 10 years that I know of and then some before that as it came with the house i bought I have since droped the coin on a front load washer and my wife loves it ...I don't even know how to turn the darn thing on, I call my daughter over to do that

I bought a front load also. I have to learn how to turn it on because I have no wife or daughter to do that for me.
