The amount of flow sometimes is not as important as even flow ... what I mean is you can get 5 to 10 times water turnover per hour through your sump if you like ( although 3 to 4 times per hour would probably suffice ) ... but more importantly is to get circulation throughout the tank ( either with extra powerheads or closed loops ) and avoid " dead spots " where detritus can accumulate unnoticed ... I think this is the problem area we run into that causes water quality issues.
So the bottom line is if you have SPS ... get 3 to 4 times per hour through the sump ( any more than that and you may run into overflow not being able to handle the volume and more contact time for skimmers / heaters etc )
And then another 7 or more times per hour from closed loops or powerheads
