I believe that it had more to do with the lighting options of the aquarist at that time and not the actual coral colour.
With the leaps and bounds of science especially in this hobby we know that actinic supplementation excite zooanthellae and causes colour to fluoresce that may not be visible under 6500 - 10000 K colour temperature.
