You're right, it's very hard to imagine such a way of life existing. It really would require a HUGE paradigm shift on all levels of society. Stranger things have happened though.
It may be hard for many of us to fathom today but there was a time when women could not vote. When slavery was normal and accepted. When it was Ok to eat gluten.
