I don't know how long
you can go without a skimmer, but I've gone two weeks without one before. It really depends on your stocking level and tank make up. What do you have in your tank? SPS, LPS, softies? Mixed reef? Keep in mind that there are a lot of people run successful reef tanks without skimmers at all :-)
The only thing I did differently (when I was skimmerless) was to add an air stone to the sump to make sure the tank was well oxygenated. The loss of skimmer can make a huge impact on your oxygen levels. This may or may not be an issue to people depending on your stocking level. I also did more water changes (every 5 days) when my skimmer was offline.
Recently I went a week skimmerless while I was treating my tank with chemiclean.
