As a sumpful guy. I am going to say, drill it if you want.
A sump is a good place to hide heaters and perhaps other equipment, provide constant water level up top in the display, and so on. A good place to dump topoff or even include a float valve to provide constancy of SG, etc. etc.
But only if you want to.
It's really about what's easiest for you.
