I think the first thing to find out about before necessarily buying an RO unit is to find out what kind of quality water you are starting out with.

For my first year in the hobby with a fish only tank while living in California I used a standard water tap purifier with no problems whatsoever. However when I went to a reef setup there was no doubt that the RO/DI unit was my next investment.

There are some great deals on RO units through one of the ebay vendors who is apparently based out of Vancouver and does sell direct (do asearch on this board I remember something pretty recent). If you go this route, my suggestion though is to buy a minimum of a 50gpd but for the price difference I would go with a 100gpd (I wish I had done that when I bought mine!)
