no not illeagal but you need to research your purchases your lucky if this thing doesnt nuke your tank, they need very stabil conditions. your doing a water change may have stressed it out plus transit from the lfs.
a big lesson was learned here hopefully do your own research stores want your money, just google something before you buy it
