Well, getting it as close to the stairs as possible on some kind of table or sawhorses helps.
Not knowing what you are dealing with for stairs and turns, I'd suggest you set up some saw horses or such at the bottom of the stairs as this is when everyone should take a rest. Besides that, it's just a matter of keeping the tank off the floor.
Do not set it down on edges and try not to twist it.
As for dollies and carpets, that all depends on the layout of your home.
They are useful when you are not dealing with stairs, but the stairs should be a fluid move; no trying to set it down. You can rest it on your thigh, but you really should keep going until you can set it down flat.
