I have thought about trying to do it myself. I'm not in any great hurry, I'm just not very good at building things. I usually make a mess, and wind up purchasing whatever I was trying to build anyway.
I'll go for a browse at Big Al's. I've never seen a sump other than in photos, so the construction might make more sense to me after I've actually looked at one.
