Use scissors to cut the stem about 2-3" from the bottom and it will grow back, don't cut it in your tank unless there is no choice, they spew out bad toxins when fragged. Also if you have to cut it in your tank then do a small water change and run carbon. And don't throw your coral away take it into an lfs for abit of credit or sell it online for cheap or give it away for free. It is a perfectly healthy specimen and a life. I rarely throw corals away, would actually rescue corals if I can.
