Funny, today a large toadstool that ive never seen polyps on, was extended and in full display. Its the 1st time in months i seen this, i was sure it was going to die. Ive had other leathers die in the past, when they do they sag and droop, then dissolve, usually it looks viable till you touch it then it melts in your hands. They are hardy corals not always in display mode.
If yours is starting to collapse and compress or lay down, try adding some supplements to your tank, leathers drool over iodide, and vitamin C.
You could also try moving him to a new area, perhaps he is upset with the flow or lighting and is now just showing signs. Leathers are not always fast to show displeasure but when they do its either supplements, lighting, flow or too high nutrient load in your tank.
